How Do We Stop Trump?

How do we stop Trump from becoming president again? We’re headed for a disaster of a second Trump Presidency and the media is enabling it by treating Trump like just another controversial candidate, not the insurrectionist and traitor he is, as a Colorado Supreme Court found him to be. It doesn’t help that Joe Biden is elderly, bad at communicating, unpopular, and making one wrong decision after another. He seems to lack a moral core when it comes to human lives being slaughtered in other countries by an “ally”. Biden’s latest disastrous decisions involve supporting Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. But Trump is no better on Israel. He would have embraced Netanyahu even harder.

Trump is also terrible on border issues. But Trump would be a far greater disaster if allowed to regain power. Trump would remake the government to protect and enrich himself and his cronies, and destroy much of our country in the process.

There’s a lot of writing about this because it’s a valid worry. Here is a recent article.

A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending.

Let’s stop the wishful thinking and face the stark reality: There is a clear path to dictatorship in the United States, and it is getting shorter every day. In 13 weeks, Donald Trump will have locked up the Republican nomination. In the RealClearPolitics poll average (for the period from Nov. 9 to 20), Trump leads his nearest competitor by 47 points and leads the rest of the field combined by 27 points. The idea that he is unelectable in the general election is nonsense — he is tied or ahead of President Biden in all the latest polls — stripping other Republican challengers of their own stated reasons for existence. The fact that many Americans might prefer other candidates, much ballyhooed by such political sages as Karl Rove, will soon become irrelevant when millions of Republican voters turn out to choose the person whom no one allegedly wants.

Whatever complaints you have about Joe Biden – and I have a lot of them – it’s just a fact that he’s a better president than Trump was or ever could be. On one issue alone – climate change – Joe Biden is someone who believes the science of it and knows we must act much more forcefully to survive and save our future on this earth. Donald Trump doesn’t even believe in climate change and wants to increase drilling for oil (after a record-setting year of oil production in the US).

So who keeps Trump from winning the 2024 election, and how? Who will do what it takes to make sure he cannot be president again? Our very lives and futures depend on this. There are some alternative thoughts on how to prevent another Trump presidency, but one that is giving me hope right now is the 14th amendment, Section 3, which states:

Fourteenth Amendment  Equal Protection and Other Rights

  • Section 3 Disqualification from Holding Office

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

This small bit of the Constitution might be all that it takes to keep Trump from stealing/winning the next election. He was definitely an officer of the US, he took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and he tried to overthrow an election result where he lost, then starting and participating in an Insurrection. He’s guilty, as stated in the Colorado case. He’s guilty as stated recently by the Secretary of State in Maine. There are other 14th Amendment cases against Trump in Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, and other states. If he is removed from the ballot in many states he can’t win.

But the Supreme Court might throw a wrench in the process of removing Trump from the ballot, and they might rule that Trump has to be on the ballot in every state. So many of the justices are conservative and loyalists to Trump this could happen, and that would give Trump a boost, and could lead to his winning the election. What would we do then? Joe Biden could declare martial law and use the Insurrection Act to use the military to prevent Trump from taking office, which is exactly what Trump wanted to do in 2021. That’s a possibility I would support because Trump is that big of a threat to the United States government. And if no one is punishing Trump for his post-election behavior, they can’t punish Joe Biden. I also have no suspicion that Joe Biden would actually want to stay in power longer than one more term. He’s probably the most traditional and stable politician this country has ever had. If Trump does “win” the election, I hope Joe Biden makes moves to prevent Trump from taking over the government again. He should, but he probably won’t.

Meanwhile, with Trump’s criminal cases moving so slowly through the courts, we can hope that the plan of removing Trump from ballots via the 14th amendment increases to the point that it’s effective. Here is one columnist who believes as I do that this is the right course of action.

Trump is like Hitler and would be 100% authoritarian if re-elected

Yes, Trump should be removed from the ballot

“The amendment states that no person shall who office “having previously taken an oath … to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion.”

Those arguments fail to grasp the threat that he poses and the gravity of his previous actions. We know from the House Jan 6. committee’s investigation, extensive media reporting, and state and federal investigations — not to mention our own eyes and ears — that Trump lost the 2020 election and instead of conceding defeat, tried to reverse the election results and remain in office. This was more than an abuse of power; it was an extraordinary, unprecedented violation of democratic values and principles.”

We don’t live in a democracy if the loser of an election gets to stay in power — and that’s what Trump tried to do. He should never be allowed to be president again.

This is not a partisan argument. I strongly oppose Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). His record suggests that he is not only more conservative, radical and anti-democratic than Trump, but also that DeSantis would be more effective than Trump in implementing his policies. But I don’t have any problem with DeSantis or any of the other current Republican candidates being on the ballot because none of them havetried to overturn the results of an election. …

In the 14th Amendment, we have a provision that is already on the books and that might allow us to keep Trump from ever being president again. We should use it.”

Trump needs to be removed from all the ballots as soon as possible.
